A New Star Wars Trilogy Is Happening Whether We Want It Or Not
According to new reporting, we are getting a new trilogy of Star Wars movies set after the Sequel Trilogy. If these reports are accurate, the trilogy will be helmed by Fant4stic and The 355 writer Simon Kinberg, a man who may hold the unenviable record for being the only screenwriter who write two different adaptations of the same source material, both of which were terrible (X-Men: The Last Stand and Dark Phoenix).
In seriousness, I do have some mixed feelings about this once you get past the Kinberg baggage. There appears to be some confusion as to whether this will be Episodes X-XII so it could just be a continuation of Rey's story without following the Skywalker Saga directly but that appears to be up in the air. Conclusively, it appears Lucasfilm learned their lesson from the Sequel Trilogy by only having one writer for all three movies. Kinberg also helped develop The Force Awakens, Rogue One, and Rebels so he has worked within Lucasfilm in the past, albeit in a smaller role.
That said, Lucasfilm has proven itself to be a very hands-on studio, going so far as to fire creatives mid-production for taking actions they don't believe is in the best interest of the overall brand. This project has already been through several writers and the first movie in this trilogy was formally announced about a year and a half ago at this point. At the same time, Kinberg's recent writing credits in major franchises illustrate an issue working with studio mandates. All of his worst releases are films that had well-documented studio interference or troubled productions. Unless Lucasfilm is going to act in a way contrary to the way they have historically since Disney acquired them, I'm not overly filled with confidence that whatever comes next will be any better than the Sequel Trilogy.
