Backpack Syndicate (Demo Impressions)

By Adam TaylorOctober 14, 20262 min read

The Backpack Syndicate demo is a Pokémon Mystery Dungeon-style crawler with a clever backpack-grid loadout, and it’s an easy wishlist ahead of 2027.

The surest sign a demo is doing its job is when you sit down to try it for a few minutes and surface over an hour later wondering where the time went. That is exactly what Backpack Syndicate, an upcoming dungeon crawler from Peepod Games, pulled off, a slice of a game that is not even out yet and still managed to swallow a whole evening. It is a demo, a tech-demo-sized taste of something slated for 2027, but it is the kind of taste that goes straight onto the wishlist, because what little is here is confident, charming, and surprisingly deep.

The pitch lands fastest as a mashup. Backpack Syndicate plays like Pokémon Mystery Dungeon, the Rescue Team and Explorers games, as its clearest ancestor: a turn-based, tile-by-tile crawl where you move one square at a time, encounter enemies, and level up as you go. But it wears a distinctive coat, a visual style somewhere between the ink-wash look of Ōkami and the cartoon charm of old Neopets, with character designs that carry a faint Final Fantasy flavor. The result looks softer and simpler than it plays, and that gap is a pleasant surprise in itself; the game runs smoother and more responsively than its unassuming art would lead you to expect.

The hook, and the thing that elevates it above a straightforward crawler, is the titular backpack. Your loadout lives in a grid, and fitting your weapons into that grid is the whole puzzle, because arranging them the right way is how you power them up and make them synergize with one another. It sounds simple stated plainly, but in practice it is anything but; even in a single demo stage there is real complexity to how pieces interlock and amplify each other, enough to make you keep fiddling with the arrangement each time you clear a floor. It is the kind of system you can feel has depth the demo is only hinting at.

As a slice, it is appropriately contained, essentially one level, a single run of the dungeon capped by a boss fight against the Dungeon Master, with the stated larger goal being to grow your syndicate over a full game. There is not much here, by design, but there is enough to be genuinely entertaining and, more importantly, enough to make you want the real thing. It is fun, engaging, and quietly addicting, the sort of loop that explains how a quick look turns into eighty-one minutes of playtime without you noticing.

The verdict on a demo is simpler than on a finished game: is it worth your time right now, and does it make you want more? On both counts, Backpack Syndicate delivers. It is well worth downloading on Steam, and it is a very easy wishlist ahead of its full release, currently slated for 2027. Whatever the complete loadout of this game ends up being, the foundation on display is strong enough to be worth watching. Play the demo; just set a timer, because it is better at taking your evening than it looks.
