Box Office Recap: Weekend of June 2nd, 2023
It's crazy to think that we are now in June and almost a quarter of the way through blockbuster season but here we are. If Venom: Let There Be Carnage, Top Gun: Maverick, and Spider-Man: No Way Home proved that the cinemas weren't dead, the month of May reaffirmed that with a massive haul for several films. Here are the most recent week's returns at the domestic box office.
- Spider-Man: Across the Spider-Verse: $120.5 Million
- The Little Mermaid: $40.6 Million
- The Boogeyman: $12.3 Million
- Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 3: $10.2 Million
- Fast X: $9.2 Million
Leading off the week with a massive haul is Spider-Man: Across the Spider-Verse and its $120 million. It's an impressive haul on a $100 million movie, especially when one considers that the first entry opened to $34 million and only pulled $384 million total at the box office. It is unclear how well it will do long term because in two weeks Elemental opens and, if its good, it will cut off Spider-Verse's long-term potential.
Carrying on from last week, The Little Mermaid had a sizable drop-off, down 57% week to week. That is a little above average for the live-action Disney remakes, however this is the first time that there has been direct competition in the family film market between the first week and the second week so the downturn is not quite as bad as it would indicate. With over $300 million overall, it will likely make back its budget, excluding merchandise sales and other ancillary revenue.
At number three is another newcomer in the form of The Boogeyman from 20th Century. For a horror movie, a opening weekend of $12 million domestic is pretty solid, especially when internationally it pulls another $8 million and the budget is only $35 million. It will likely have legs since there is not another horror movie until the new Insidious movie in July.
Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 3's additions brings its global cumulative to $780 million, putting it between the first movie and the second where it will likely stay.
Fast X rounds out the top five with its additional $9 million which helps carry it over the $600 million global mark. It's not a surprise that there are a ton of additional spin-offs in development alongside the eleventh (mainline) entry.
