Box Office Recap: Weekend of May 26th, 2023

With a long Memorial Day weekend, the month of May ends on a strong note. Keep in mind, these numbers are the Friday-Sunday numbers, excluding Monday's dailies.

  • The Little Mermaid: $95.4 Million
  • Fast X: $23.0 Million
  • Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 3: $20.4 Million
  • The Super Mario Bros. Movie: $6.3 Million
  • The Machine: $5.0 Million

Surprising no one, The Little Mermaid was the runaway winner of the weekend with an opening that puts it above Aladdin, Maleficent, and Cinderella but below The Lion King and The Jungle Book. Whether or not the movie has legs, it will more than likely make back its budget, even with a lackluster performance overseas.

Fast X has fallen off a cliff between week one and week two which does not bode well for it's domestic box office. On the other hand, it is doing very well overseas with over $100 Million earned in China alone and it's total pull is over $500 Million to date.

Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 3 continues to hold strong in the face of solid competition as it hangs onto the number two slot overall at the box office this year, just behind The Super Mario Bros. Movie. Odds are it won't catch up because of how stacked the summer competition is.

The Super Mario Bros. Movie also continues to hold, however this week it could drop off the top five completely with the arrival of Spider-Man: Across the Spider-Verse to monopolize the family movie market.

Rounding out the top five is The Machine, a movie I know nothing about besides the fact that it's a comedy and stars Mark Hamill and Bert Kreischer. Still, $5 million in the opening weekend with minimal marketing and a $20 million budget is impressive.
