These most recent two episodes have done a lot to endear the viewer to Ruby and make her feel more like a fleshed out character and not just a plot device. Allowing her what is basically an entire episode to develop as a person and solve a problem without the Doctor allows for her to prove her ingenuity in saving the future from a dictator.
That said, the fundamental problem with the episode is that, while it feels good as a cohesive unit, it doesn't make a ton of sense if you stop and think about it for any length of time. What was Old Ruby saying to scare everyone off? Why did The Doctor stepping into the fairy circle cause all this? Don't think about it too hard and just enjoy the ride.
