"The Girls on the Bus" struggles to delve into important issues, leaving characters feeling like stereotypes.

The biggest recurring issue with The Girls on the Bus has been the fact that it brushes up against big issues but never really explores them deeply. The episode is called "The Debate" and, while there is a debate between the key four cast members, it never goes beneath the most surface level of arguments. At one point Lola says that there is no other side to issues like climate change which is immediately rebutted by Grace who just says yes there is. That's the end of the debate. Most of the time this just ends up causing a disservice to Lola as a character who continues to just feel like a caricature inserted to live up to stereotypes for both the youth and the far-left.

That's not to say the show or the episode is bad because this episode does fundamentally cut to the core of each character's personal emotional journey for the entire run of the show. Considering the show is just past the halfway point, presumably the next episode will the beginning of certain characters moving towards the roles they will be in as the season ends.
