Rounding Out The 2024 Streaming Schedule
So with this week's announcement that Skeleton Crew will be debuting on December 3rd, we now have a good sense of what the end of 2024 will look like across both Disney and Max in terms of the large franchise content. Here are some of the key dates to look forward to:
- Agatha All Along (Disney+): September 18th, 2024
- The Penguin (HBO & MAX): September 19th, 2024
- Dune: Prophecy (HBO & MAX): November 2024
- Skeleton Crew (Disney+): December 3rd, 2024
- Creature Commandos (MAX): December 2024
Of note this creates an interesting paradigm shift for Disney where there will be a sizable gap between the end of Agatha All Along and Skeleton Crew. Like WandaVision, Agatha All Along is nine episodes so the two episode premiere on the 18th will mean the show carries through November 7th, leaving basically a full month in the middle without a show. I don't think the month of November will be empty though since Lilo and Stitch is on the way without a release date and there is the possibility that a Diary of a Wimpy Kid special comes out this year as well. Still, I don't think it speaks highly to Skeleton Crew that it is basically in the kill zone spot that was occupied by Willow, National Treasure: Edge of History, and Percy Jackson and the Olympians, only the last of which lasted for more than one season.
On the other side of the street, MAX has basically a well-oiled machine where the eight episodes of The Penguin runs through November 7th, the six episodes of Dune: Prophecy likely has to start at once after on November 14th for six episodes, and then Creature Commandos would either start at the end of Dune: Prophecy or run concurrently at the end of the run. This also doesn't take into consideration the fact that MAX also will be running Salem's Lot, presumably around Halloween.
It is starting to look like we are reaching the end of the streaming wars as Disney+ continues to hemorrhage money while all the "MAX originals" (except maybe Creature Commandos) have been rebranded as HBO shows in the future. Peacock has also canned one of their larger big-budget draws with the Battlestar Galactica reboot and Netflix has hitched its wagon to Zack Snyder which has proven out to be a poor decision. Disney+ does still have a bunch of content in development including a second seasons of both Ahsoka and Andor, MCU shows about Ironheart, Vision, Daredevil, and Wonder Man, and a Pixar show that was due for release about a year ago, but we are reaching the plateau of their released content.
On a personal note, if I were to rank my enthusiasm for these shows, this is how I would rank them:
- The Penguin
- Creature Commandos
- Dune: Prophecy
- Skeleton Crew
- Agatha All Along
I will not elaborate.
