The Search For Supergirl Narrows
The Supergirl casting options have narrowed down to two actresses.
Last week, it was reported that the search for the DCU's Supergirl had come down to three actresses. New reporting indicates that the search has now narrowed to just two candidates.
Previously, it was reported that Milly Alcock (House of the Dragon), Emilia Jones (CODA), and Meg Donnelly (The Winchesters) were the final three candidates. New reporting from The Hollywood Reporter claims that Emilia Jones is no longer under consideration for the role, leaving the decision down to just Alcock and Donnelly. Supergirl is reported to have a cameo in James Gunn's Superman: Legacy before headlining her own movie Supergirl: Woman of Tomorrow based on Tom King's run of the same name.
My money would be on Donnelly taking the role for a few reasons. Right now, Alcock is still tied up in House of the Dragon and may be for some time in the future. As long as that show is a money-maker for Warner Bros. (and the flagship exclusive show for Max as of right now), Warner Bros. may not want to split her time between the DC Universe and the Game of Thrones Universe. Conversely, Meg Donnelly is not currently tied to anything large enough to keep her from being a major tentpole in a franchise since The Winchesters has ended.
The other big thing that gives Donnelly's candidacy a boost is the fact that she's already played Supergirl three times in various animated projects (Crisis on Infinite Earths Parts 1 and 2 and Legion of Super-Heroes). Beyond the fact that it shows her familiarity with the role, Gunn also made the point to say that actors and actresses would play the same role across multiple mediums. If DC is going to follow through on this (unlike Star Wars with their Expanded Universe), this would be a great place to show audiences that this is the new way things will work going forward.
