With about seven months until release, Warner Brothers and DC Studios have officially released their first look at their upcoming live-action cinematic reboot of the DC Universe. Check out the teaser for Superman below:

So some notes, I do like that there is color in this trailer and it isn't the same dreary Manchester by the Sea color grading its predecessor had. It's still a little blue but at least the underlying colors are brighter to offset. This is also just a teaser mostly designed to give viewers a general sense of the look and feel of this film before a substantive story trailer comes out, probably in March around the time of the NCAA Basketball playoff. I don't feel we can properly judge the large supporting cast until we see how the movie is going to handle them with the substantive story trailer.

That said, I'm still going to speculate. Since we know the movie is going to start with Superman already working as Superman in a world where there are tons of heroes and villains like Mr. Terrific, Hawkgirl, Green Lantern, and Circe (see Creature Commandos). This movie is going to be about Superman learning he is not alone and can work as a team with the Justice Society that we see all over this trailer. Waller is still looking for her Suicide Squad replacement and presumably something happens here that separates her ability to control the Justice Society leading to her creating a new team with The Authority.  This will put Superman and the newly formed Justice Society on a collision course with The Authority over the course of Chapter One of the new DCU.

Now, we don't know Waller is in the movie, but we do know The Engineer is. We also know some of what's happened in the waning days of the DCEU is canon, but not all of it. Could the remaining canon carry-over include Waller, Harcourt, and Economos' work with the Justice Society? Probably not specifically including Black Adam and Shazam directly but the general idea would still work. If the Justice Society defects but The Engineer hangs back to work with Waller, that would build Chapter One in an interesting way towards a crossover that would be intriguing. Still, we will have to see in a few months when this movie comes out.
