Was The Pokemon Presents Presentation Good?
I don't want to outright say this year's Pokemon Presents presentation was a dud because the announcement of Pokemon Legends Z-A with a 2025 release date and a mostly cinematic trailer does fill me with optimism, however it is becoming increasingly apparent that the franchise has moved pretty far away from from where it was during its peak.
Fundamentally, the issue with this presentation is that they announced it a week early, only for it to be a bunch of updates for their mobile/live service fare and also the announcement of the next mainline game. I'm not here to complain about them not specifically catering to me as someone who doesn't play Unite or Cafe ReMix or Sleep or Masters EX or a mobile version of the collectable card game, but what happened to some of the other sub-franchises? Mystery Dungeon has not had a release since 2020. Pinball hasn't had a release in over 20 years. Ranger hasn't had a release in almost 15 years. They also still have yet to port any of the mainline games and a good amount of the spin-offs to Switch Online which feels weird.
There's also the question of the release window for Pokémon Legends X-A. 2025 is very broad and will have the release of the Switch's successor in the middle of it. Will this be like Breath of the Wild where it bridges the gap between the Switch and the Switch 2 with a release on both? Is this just an early 2025 game people buy before the Switch 2? Is it a late 2025 game only for the Switch? Is it actually for the Switch 2 but since it hasn't been announced by Nintendo yet it's still branded as for the Switch? The idea seems cool (take the Legends concept but move it to a cyberpunk future set entirely within a sprawling Lumiose City) and giving it an extra year to bake seems like they've learned from the failings of Scarlet and Violet (and not doing another remake with the team behind Brilliant Diamond and Shining Pearl following the backlash and poor reception is also telling) but the fact that they aren't forthcoming about this is also a little strange.
I'm cautiously optimistic about Legends Z-A, however the optimism for the franchise is not quite there. Let's see how this plays out later this year when new information comes out but until then all we can do is speculate.
